Match Report

A new horizon dawned with the Whites splitting into two teams, with an agreement of the FA facilitating the reinstatement of the Blacks meaning that a depleted side was sent to Haddenham in the first round of the cup.  A new system of notification also worked against us, with miscommunication meaning some children were late.  Standing in the wrong field trying to work out where we should be playing for 15 minutes didn’t help either!  The 6 players that took the pitch battled manfully for 10 minutes (character has rarely been a problem for this team) and the scores were still level when EYFC were up to full strength.  The lack of a team plan showed though, with the new players simply joining the fray, and two goals were conceded just before the break.  The interval gave the team time to re-group and a much better second quarter saw the teams both draw blanks.  The defensive partnership of Frankie and Alfie again showed its strength.  In truth, there wasn’t much attacking threat, but the team battled well and showed great spirit.  Onto the second half and a familiar pattern followed.  William showed some excellent leadership skills in defence and Alex did very well in goal.  Samuel was his usual combative self, but again our defence was twice breached.  Onto the last quarter and was there to be a miraculous comeback?  The ball was put in behind the Haddenham defence and William bore down on goal.  I thought the chance was gone as Haddenham ran back in numbers to put four men between William and the goal, but a turn and a left foot bullet into the top corner, going in off the post, had the crowd in raptures.  Alas, that proved to be the only shot EYFC could muster in the match (not a bad conversion rate!).  Mia did well in midfield and Patrick did fantastically in goal.  EYFC held firm to win the last quarter - two lost, one drawn and one won!  Overall, the better team won, but everyone played well and they continue to improve week on week, which is a great sign.  Alex and Frankie ran him close, but William was awarded player of the match.  But well done all.
