Match Report

This week saw us travel to our local rivals to play SWCFC Blues.  As it worked well last week, again we decided to mix up the goalkeepers.  Mia was first to take the gloves and, in keeping with most of the season, she again didn’t concede.  She was well protected by Frankie and Henry, who formed a very solid defensive partnership.  Daniel (centre), Alfie (left) and Flynn (right, until replaced by Rhys) patrolled midfield and Alex started up front until being substituted by Albie.  In keeping with recent weeks, we started the game well and took a large measure of control, enabling the defenders to join in attacks.  A succession of corners were won, most of which were taken by Alfie and were causing chaos in the SW box.  Daniel was all energetic in midfield, breaking up any threat, and eventually our possession told, with Alfie feeding a ball to Alex 6 yards out and he calmly passed the ball into the net.  Onto the second quarter and this time Daniel donned the gloves.  Alfie and Alex were now in defence, with Alfie holding his position whilst Alex pushed forward at every opportunity.  Albie was now in central midfield, flanked by Flynn (left) and Rhys (right, until replaced by Henry).  Mia started as the striker until substituted by Frankie.  More dominance ensued, with Flynn showing some brilliant ball skills with some of his dribbling.  One great save from the SWCFC ‘keeper kept Albie at bay and somehow, despite laying siege to the SWCFC goal, there were no changes to the score line.  Onto the third quarter and this time Frankie went between the sticks and with Albie and Daniel in defence.  Alex (centre), Henry (right) and Rhys (left, until replaced by Mia) were in midfield, supplying the bullets for Alfie and then Flynn up front.  The game followed a similar pattern, with some great movement, passing and dribbling.  This time there were rewards for the hard effort, with Alfie being found in middle.  Despite a good turn and shot, the ball hit the inside of the post and somehow stayed out, but thankfully Alex was on hand to pass a second into the empty net.  There was then clear daylight between the teams when Flynn worked the ball into the middle for Henry to turn and smash a venomous shot into the bottom right had corner.  Onto the final quarter and Alex was now in goal.  Rhys and Flynn played in defence and Frankie, Mia (left) and Albie (right, until replaced by Alfie) were in midfield.  Henry started as the forward until he was replaced by Daniel.  Albie played very well on the wing, making some great runs and putting in a couple of pin point crosses, but advantage wasn’t taken and as the half went on SWCFC began to get a foothold.  One of their forwards managed to bundle the ball through four fairly week tackles and the deficit was reduced.  Frankie was his usual combative self, winning some great headers to help repel attacks, and thankfully Alex was inspired in goal, with a couple of excellent saves avoiding what would have been a thoroughly undeserved comeback.  As has been the case in recent weeks, everyone played well.  The referee picked out Daniel for particular praise and Alex, Frankie and Flynn were excellent.  The player of the match though was given to Alfie, who was outstanding.  Well done everyone and may the winning streak continue.
