Match Report

Storm Hannah, a pitch with a lot of grass and the smell of the local pig farm greeted us in Shreepeth.  Probably not the ideal occasion to have everyone available and try and take a team photo!  In terms of the game, it can be summarised by a team that played some great football verses the Shreepeth goalkeeper who was outstanding and had a long kick on him (yes, it was a him) that was very effective in the first half with the wind at his back.  Overall the team played really well, with some great play.  Everyone did themselves justice and it is just one of those matches where we simply didn’t get due reward for our effort and play.  Lessons learnt hopefully include the importance of getting something on high balls, rather than letting them bounce, and you can’t lose concentration when defending corners, especially when dominating the game.  Also, some of the newer kids are coming to realise that playing in defence still gives you the opportunity to go forward and, in fact, some of our best attacks came from defenders.  The proof of this was our solitary goal, scored by Rhys when he pressed from a defensive position and robbed the ball, giving him the chance to run through on goal and produce an excellent finish to score.  That halved the deficit, but we simply couldn’t go on from there.  As always though, the result is irrelevant.  The kids couldn’t have played much better and just needed a bit of luck/a little more composure in front of goal and the score line will have reflected the game.  Any of the kids could have been given player of the match, but it was given to Frankie for a near faultless performance.
