Match Report

We were saved this week by Ethan and Daniel kindly agreeing to help us, giving us 7 players.  We started with Albie and Ollie in defence, Rhys in centre midfield, flanked by Ethan and Daniel, and Alfie up front.  Not for the first time in recent weeks it took us a little time to find our feet, with too many players forgetting space is your friend - there was a strong wind and we had decided to keep the ball on the ground, but the closeness of the players meant some excellent passing went nowhere and we were swarmed.  Haverhill, always a tough opponent, managed to capitalise and it looked like being an uphill battle.  Eventually, though, we got to grips with what was required.  Some good work by Rhys led to him passing the ball to Ethan, who toe poked the ball into the bottom corner.  Further chances came and went and at the turn the scores were level.  The second half saw Rhys and Alfie in defence and we tried something new, with Ethan and Ollie on the wings and Albie and Daniel in central midfield, one to break forward whenever possible.  This worked surprising well - Haverhill kept two in defence which meant we were able to dominate possession and pour forward in numbers.  This was rewarded when a great break from Daniel saw him feed the ball to Ethan, who produced an almost identical finish to the first half.  We were now in the groove and creating further chances, but weren’t able to add to our tally and Haverhill weren’t without their own openings, with only a couple of great saves from Joseph keeping EYFC’s noses in front.  Overall, it was an even game that we just edged, but as always it is the performance at this age that is more important and that was very pleasing.  Everyone played well with Alfie excellent in defence, but the man of the match was given to Ollie who had put great pressure on the ball when in defence during the first half, stopping a number of Haverhill attacks; kept trying to pass the ball throughout; and in the second half did very well in working up and down the left wing.  Well done everyone.
