Match Report

Old adversaries (SWCFC Yellow) were welcomed to the Rec for an early kick off.  Historically we have been evenly matched and so it proved again; however, we put into effect our recent practice and it held us in very good stead.  The first half saw Alex and Ollie in front of Joseph (captain for the day), with a midfield of Albie (right), Henry (centre) and Rhys (left) with Alfie as the striker.  We played some lovely football, but our only reward was a goal from a Rhys corner, that was part cleared as far as Henry, who swivelled and hit a great shot into the corner of the goal from 12 yards.  It would have been daylight robbery, but we were almost pegged back prior to the break from a counter attack but for a superb clearance from Alex on the line, running back towards his goal.  Overall, we were largely dominant and only some excellent goalkeeping kept the scores close.  It was, however, a hot September morning and the lack of substitutes was taking its toll.  Consequently, at the break we adopted a new formation, with three at the back.  Rhys (we will work on the fitness!), adopted the role as the central defender flanked by Alfie on the left and Alex on the right.  Henry and Albie were given the unenviable task of winning the midfield battle and Ollie was tasked with scoring a goal.  Again we had the lion's share of the possession and created far more chances.  The new formation took some adjusting to, but they did fantastically well and were rewarded when an Alex throw in was part controlled by Ollie to Alfie, who threaded an inch perfect pass into Henry's path for him to run onto and hammer the ball into the SWCFC net.  Virtually the last kick of the ball caused some heart flutters when SWCFC grabbed a goal back, but a well deserved victory was secured.  Ollie and Alfie proved that they are very capable as strikers, making some great runs and finding some excellent space.  Henry showed real improvement in his decision making and Joseph hopefully learnt the importance of positioning when the opponent has the ball.  Albie showed some great dribbling skills and everyone showed their passing skills that we have been working on.  We are now two games into the season and i am really pleased with how the team is progressing.  The result really doesn't matter, but it is always more fun when you are on the preferable end of it!  :)  Alex was given match of the match, but it really could have been any of them as they were all excellent.  We now have a week or so break and hopefully we can carry on in the same vein when we return.  Well done everyone.
