Match Report

A tough draw in the cup saw us face Ely Crusaders, who were narrowly beaten by our green team after extra time in the quarter finals last year.  We came into the game with confidence though, having played really well so far this season, and it would be interesting to see how we fared given the improvements we have undoubtedly made.  I am pleased to report that Ely were pushed hard, with everyone maintaining their high levels of performance.  The confidence the kids are showing on the ball is great and their defending is continuing to improve, particular in terms of when to press and when to hold their positions.  One thing to work on though is attacking positions when we do and don’t have the ball and looking for the players that take up those positions.  Any road, the first half was Albie and Ollie in front of Joseph, with Alex centre midfield, Henry right wing, Alfie/Rhys on the left and Rhys/Flynn up front.  Ely had more of the play, but their ‘keeper was kept honest (he played well as a sweeper keeper and made a couple of very good saves) and their only reward was a 20 yard piledriver into the top corner.  The second half saw us line up with an inspired Joseph still in goal, Alex and Rhys/Flynn in defence, Henry/Albie centre midfield, Alfie right wing, Rhys/Flynn left wing and Albie/Ollie up front.  Playing down the hill EYFC had more of the play, but two goals in 3 minutes put daylight between the teams and, despite continuing to press, we were unable to reduce the deficit.  I must say I am immensely proud of all of the kids.  They never let their heads go down and really do try and embrace what they are being taught.  The highlight was that Albie and Alfie both seem to have learnt how to head the ball!  Fear not, it doesn’t mean that our cup run is over, just that we are now in the “plate” competition rather than the “cup”.  Everyone played well, but special mentions go to Joseph, who was (as usual) excellent in goal, and Henry.   though.  Albie was awarded player of the match though, for his tireless running and all-round team play.
