Match Report

The second round of the plate saw us welcome Histon Hornets.  Unfortunately, a late withdrawal by an injured Patrick left us with a bare 7 (with Samuel doing us a big favour by playing the full game, when he was supposed to be heading off early).  The first half saw us line up with Joseph in goal, Albie and Samuel in defence, a midfield of Alex (centre), Ollie (right) and Rhys (left) and Henry up front.  We played well and it was an even match, although Joseph was called on to make some good saves when our defence was breached.  It certainly wasn’t one-way traffic, with Ollie, in particular, finding some great attacking positions.  Henry continued his excellent recent form and I am very pleased that he has really started to use his left foot and weigh up his options when in possession.  At the turn, however, we were one goal to the bad.  Onto the second half and this time Alex and Rhys were in defence, Albie (centre), Henry (right) and Samuel (left) in midfield and Ollie in the forward role.  It remained an even game and the scores were levelled with Henry played a pass through to Ollie who, from the acutest of angles, managed to squeeze the ball past the Histon goalkeeper and into the net.  This saw scenes not before witnessed, with the Histon players swearing at each other and the coaches!  They didn’t seem up for the fight and I am sure falling behind would have caused them to crumble entirely, but they had some good players and one mazy run, slaloming around three or four tackles where our body shape was all wrong, saw the lead restored.  A goal from a direct freekick then put some gloss on the score line.  Despite some good possession, Joseph pulled off an excellent late penaly save to keep us within touching distance, but alas we were unable to claw the deficit back.  As has been consistent throughout this season so far, the team did the club proud.  Joseph was awarded the player of the match for some excellent saves and good delivery, but as is often the case any number of the players could have been given it.  The cup run is over for another year, but we have nothing to be sorry about.  Well done all.
