Match Report

A journey to Witchford saw us play their Colts team.  A blustery cross wind levelled the playing field, but we certainly coped with the conditions better than our opponents and largely dominated the game.  We regularly rotated positions in this match, with the players showing their versatility by playing well no matter where they were on the pitch.  The game remained scoreless for 15 minutes, but our early pressure eventually told when a golf mouth scramble saw Ollie hit a goal bound shot from close range into Alex and in.  This saw Witchford have their best period of the game, but the defence held firm and when Witchford were able to shoot Joseph was imperious, as usual.  The second half saw near total pressure for Elsenham.  The lead was extended when Patrick dribbled well from the right wing before unleashing a cross shot that was defected onto the bar, with Albie on hand to deliver a controlled left foot volley finish from an acute angle.  Our main concern was keeping Joseph warm, but somehow we conspired to present the ball to a Witchford forward, standing on his own in front of goal, who was able to halve the deficit.  Thankfully, our control of the game was such that I remained confident we wouldn’t throw this game away.  Following a gust of wind that required a number of our coats to blow onto the pitch, which may have led to Witchford losing concentration, Sam threw a restart to Albie, who produced a great low strike from distance.  The icing on the cake was when Alfie passed the ball to Flynn, who reminded us what he can do by producing a mazey run before rolling the ball past the Witchford goalkeeper and into the net.  What a difference playing on 4G makes to Flynn’s game!  Everyone had played fantastically well.  For the second week in a row Albie can feel hard done by, but Flynn was outstanding today with bravery to match his undoubted skill and he was therefore awarded player of the match.  They should all fee very proud of themselves though.
