Elsenham 0-2 Rawmarsh St Josephs
The second day started with a fixture against Rotherham side Rawmarsh St Joseph's. Playing the runners-up in the top division of one of the strongest leagues in Yorkshire, this was always likely to be a stiff test and so it proved. Rawmarsh moved the ball around very quickly and went ahead when their striker weaved his way into a shooting position and struck his effort in off the far post. Elsenham did create chances, with Rawmarsh having to scramble the ball clear on one occasion, however the game was over when their lightning fast frontman was put through and slammed the ball past Jon Booth. A shot that crashed off the bar might have added to their lead late on. Unsurprisingly, Rawmarsh went on to win the tournament.
Elsenham 0-1 Parkland Tigers
A slow start and some wayward finishing cost Elsenham a chance at quick redemption in the penultimate game against Northamptonshire side Parkland. Only a few minutes into the game a ball across goal found an unmarked Parkland player who had a simple task to roll the ball into the net. After failing to make much impression in the first period, Elsenham took complete control in the second and had a great chance to level when a penalty was awarded for handball, however Luke Fisher's spot kick was saved by the 'keeper. Mitchell Seaman twice got through on goal but was unable to finish on either occasion, while Michael Jarvis's header from a corner went inches past the post.
Elsenham 1-0 Heybridge
Mitchell Seaman
After three straight defeats, the boys went into their final game determined to go out on a high. From the start, Elsenham dominated all over the pitch and so nearly went in front when Sam Irish's powerful 20 yard drive crashed down off the bar. Having failed to take any of their opportunities, Elsenham at last went in front when Mitchell Seaman escaped the Heybridge defence and drew the 'keeper before rolling the ball into the goal. Michael Jarvis's powerful header was brilliantly saved by the Heybridge 'keeper to prevent Elsenham extending their lead late on.

Castle Rise Imps 0-4 Elsenham
Mason Duckett, Jon Booth 2, OG
Kettering Youth League side Castle Rise arrived at the tournament with only 10 players, and having conceded 207 goals this season were never likely to present much of a threat. After a goalless first 12 minutes, 'keeper Jon Booth came out as a striker to wreak havoc, scoring twice after Mason Duckett had put Elsenham in front when a free kick from inside his own half bounced over the Castle Rise 'keeper and into the net. An own goal completed the scoring after Mitchell Seaman's strike had rattled the post .
AFC Dunstable 1-0 Elsenham
Chiltern League Division 1 side Dunstable provided our second opponents and although Elsenham edged a close first half, there was no score at half-time. Dunstable's 6 foot 4 inch giant was proving something of a problem for the Elsenham defence and after being allowed to cut in from the right flank all the way into the area, he slotted home the only goal of the game.
Babylon 0-0 Elsenham
Dartford Youth League winners Babylon were up next in a game more memorable for a number of unsavoury moments than any noteworthy goal action. Neither side was able to create a clearcut opening and the game was heading for a goalless draw when Babylon's right back went down under challenge from Dean Clayden and had to be carried from the field on a stretcher. Everyone at the club wishes him a speedy recovery.
Elsenham 0-1 Oxted & District
Oxted, of the Tandridge League, were the day's final opponents and were deserving victors. After a number of close strikes on goal, the winner eventually came midway through the second half. Elsenham struggled to create any clear cut chances, with Dean Clayden putting a couple of half-chances wide. Oxted finished the tournament as runners up.

Sawbridgeworth v Elsenham
- 30 April 2008
Venue:
Crofters End
Score:
Sawbridgeworth 0-2 Elsenham
Scorers:
Dean Clayden, Mason Duckett
Dean Clayden and Mason Duckett got the goals as a rampant second-half performance took Elsenham to within one game of the league title at a cold, wet Crofters End. After a number of indifferent displays in recent games and with Royston still breathing down their necks at the top of the table, the visitors knew they couldn't afford any slip ups here, however the evening didn't start well when 'keeper Jon Booth turned his ankle in the warm-up! Although taking his place in the line-up, it was clear his movement was impaired, putting an added onus on the Elsenham defence. Sawbo weren't about to show any pity and a low cross that went straight across the goal served as an early warning. Both sides were creating chances and Elsenham almost made the breakthrough when the impressive Ed Beanland struck a fierce shot that had the Sawbo 'keeper at full stretch to tip behind for a corner. The hosts almost went in front themselves when a glancing effort went inches wide of the post, however at the half-time whistle there was nothing to divide the teams. Elsenham made three changes at the break, with Ross Cooper slotting into defence, Sam Irish replacing Robert Smith at right midfield and Adam Mace joining Clayden in attack. Despite playing up the slope, the revamped side immediately seized control of the game, with some fast incisive football. Beanland was proving increasingly influential in midfield, winning countless balls and providing quick supply to his wide players, and after a couple of chances had come and gone Elsenham finally grabbed the lead when Duckett's corner found it's way to Clayden, who stabbed the ball in from close range. The visitors were now in full flow and could have increased the lead sooner than they did, however the second goal when it came was a real treat. A series of quick passes got the ball out to Irish on the right who laid the ball back for Jack Gumble to swing over a long cross ball that found Duckett in space on the left. The midfielder bore down on goal unchallenged and cracked a left-footed shot across the 'keeper and into the far corner. Another slick passing move almost created a third goal, however a combination of soft finishing and last ditch defending kept the home goal in tact. Sawbo sought late consolation, however the central defensive pairing of Michael Jarvis and Jon Bruce provided great protection for their injured 'keeper, who thankfully had little work to do. Clayden twice shot wide in the closing stages, however by this stage the result was already in the bag, leaving Elsenham just one win away from the league title.
Potton Colts v Elsenham
- 27 April 2008
Venue:
Mill Lane
Score:
Potton Colts 3-1 Elsenham
Scorers:
Dean Clayden (pen)
Elsenham's title challenge took a knock as Potton deservedly took the points against their old rivals at Mill Lane. A win would all have wrapped up the league for Elsenham, but the home team showed in the early stages that they were determined not to let that happen. Time and again, Potton were first to the ball and it was no surprise when their big No. 7 opened the scoring with a fierce drive from distance after being allowed too much time in the middle of the pitch. Elsenham weren't doing enough in midfield and were punished again shortly afterwards as the Potton player finished well from close in. The half-time whistle brought some much needed respite for the visitors and a chance to regroup. The game was back in the balance 10 minutes into the second half when Robert Smith was blocked off inside the area and Dean Clayden stepped up to convert the spot kick. Clayden then shot just over as Elsenham fought for an equaliser, however with just over 10 minutes remaining Potton were awarded a penalty of their own when the ball hit Michael Jarvis in the head and the referee pointed to the spot for handball. For once, Jon Booth in the Elsenham goal was unable to do anything about the resulting kick, which was clinically despatched to restore Potton's two goal advantage. Booth then pulled off a superb save low to his right to prevent the hosts increasing their lead further. Elsenham left knowing that the league title is still theirs to win, but that a significant improvement in performance will be needed to see them across the finishing line.
BSCFC Athletic v Elsenham
- 23 April 2008
Venue:
Grange Paddocks
Score:
BSCFC Athletic 1-3 Elsenham
Scorers:
Dean Clayden 3
Dean Clayden's hat-trick helped Elsenham close in on the Division 2 title with victory over a dogged Athletic side at Grange Paddocks. After an even first few minutes, the pattern for the first half soon became established, with the away side dominating possession, but struggling to break down a packed Athletic defence. Elsenham 'keeper Jon Booth was reduced to a virtual spectator as his team kept their opponents pinned back in their own half, however the hosts are a well organised side and battled hard to preserve their goal. Clayden shot over, Mason Duckett headed wide and a goal mouth melee came to nothing to send the teams in level at the break. With strike partner Mitchell Seaman an absentee, Clayden took the goal-scoring responsibilities on himself and early in second half got the breakthrough. A terrible mix-up in the Stortford defence allowed the striker in on goal to hit the ball left footed past the 'keeper. The goal forced a change in Athletic's approach and the game became more open as the home side ventured further forward in search of an equaliser. The Elsenham defence dealt with the threat comfortably, however the visitors were still failing to make much impression at the other end, with Clayden and Adam Mace both hitting shots that ended up in the River Stort rather than the back of the net! At last, the second goal came when Clayden was allowed time to turn and drift across goal before striking a 20-yard shot that went in with the assistance of the post. Thinking the game was won, Elsenham seemed to switch off and within a minute Athletic had reduced their arrears with a high shot that sailed over Booth and into the top of the net. The goal changed the momentum of the game as the home side swept forward, forcing a series of corners, but failing to get in a meaningful strike on goal. With five minutes left, Clayden made the game safe when he found space to send in another long range effort that the Athletic 'keeper was unable to hold. So despite one of their least convincing displays of the season, Elsenham left with three more points safely secured.
Wymondley Park v Elsenham
- 20 April 2008
Venue:
Hitchin Cricket Club
Score:
Wymondley Park 3-4 Elsenham
Scorers:
Dean Clayden 2, Sam Irish 2
Dean Clayden and Sam Irish each grabbed a brace as a super first-half display enabled Elsenham to gain a crucial three points in the quest for the division title. Playing against a physically much bigger side, the visitors knew this was going to be a tough fixture, however it was Elsenham that struck first when Luke Fisher slipped the ball through for Clayden to finish cooly from the edge of the penalty area. Wymondley were soon back on terms as a great cross from their right was met perfectly by the home striker to give 'keeper Jon Booth no chance. As the half progressed, the home side became rougher in their approach, however Elsenham stuck to their football and grabbed the lead back when Irish's ball in from the right was missed by both Clayden and the 'keeper and nestled in the back of the net. The league leaders were now in full flight and when Adam Mace supplied a perfect ball for Clayden, the striker made no mistake in scoring his 43rd goal of a lucrative campaign. Irish added a fourth before half time with a shot from the right-hand side, to give Elsenham complete control at half-time. Wymondley knew they needed an early response in the second period and almost got it when a penalty was awarded, but yet again Booth showed his prowess against spot kicks by turning the ball away. Shortly afterwards, the hosts were fortunate to reduce their arrears when a high hopeful ball into the box dipped in just under the bar. They then pulled another goal back after the Elsenham defence failed to clear, setting up a nervous final 20 minutes. Wymondley became increasingly physical as the equaliser eluded them, with Robert Smith being felled by a forearm smash and Michael Jarvis then being head-butted by an opponent, who received no punishment despite being reported to the referee by the linesman. With time almost up, Booth allowed a tame shot to slip from his grasp and into the net, but was relieved to see the linesman's flag raised for offside, allowing Elsenham to leave with all the points. Wymondley's rough-house tactics and the ref's inability or unwillingness to stamp it out made this an unpleasant encounter, but Elsenham left with the knowledge that the title is one game nearer.
Biggleswade v Elsenham
- 13 April 2008
Venue:
Windermere Drive
Score:
Biggleswade 4-3 Elsenham
Scorers:
Dean Clayden 2, Luke Fisher (pen)
Elsenham suffered League Cup heartbreak as Biggleswade snatched a last-gasp equaliser and went on to win the semi-final in extra time after a pulsating tie at the Lakes. The defeat was rough justice on an Elsenham side that performed heroics to battle back from an early two goal deficit against the mightily big and imposing third division leaders. With Mason Duckett absent and Josh Daniel cup-tied, the visitors took only 12 players with them and looked in danger of being swamped in the early stages as Biggleswade dominated. An early strike on goal looked like opening the scoring but was saved superbly by 'keeper Jon Booth. Shortly afterwards the home side were awarded a penalty, but Booth again came to his team's rescue, brilliantly parrying the spot kick aside. Still Biggleswade forged forward as Elsenham struggled to win anything in midfield, and eventually the inevitable breakthrough came, though not without controversy as the ref ignored the linesman's flag for a foul and awarded the goal, even though Ross Cooper had the stud marks in his leg to show that the assistant may have been right. The pattern of play continued and when the visitors failed to clear their lines, Biggleswade took advantage to strike a second. However, this Elsenham team are made of stern stuff and a rare incursion into Biggleswade territory resulted in a free kick that Dean Clayden struck powerfully into the top corner to narrow their arrears. The half-time whistle was a welcome sound for the away team, who could count themselves fortunate to still be in the game. With some clear instructions ringing in their ears, the division two leaders started the second half with much more purpose. Clayden so nearly levelled when his curling effort hit the inside angle of post and bar and somehow stayed out. Minutes later, the striker was barged over in the box. Penalty! Luke Fisher stepped up to beat the 'keeper with ease from the spot. With that encouragement behind them, Elsenham pushed on and midway through the second period the ball was slipped through for Clayden who applied a wonderful finish to put the visitors in front for the first time, causing the manager to tear his calf muscle in celebration! Clayden almost grabbed a hat-trick when his shot went just past the far post, and as the clock ticked down a place in the final beckoned. With time almost expired Adam Mace made a great tackle on an opponent to put the ball into touch, but the ref didn't see it that way and awarded Biggleswade a free kick. The ball was pumped into the Elsenham box and broke for a home player to put the it into the net and spark mass celebrations that were only brought to an end by the final whistle! Having been so close, Elsenham looked deflated by the prospect of an extra 20 minutes and midway through the first period, Biggleswade got the goal that sent them into the final. Elsenham tried everything to find a way back in the second period, but ran out of time. Congratulations must go to both teams for a truly epic game of football. Despite our immense disappointment, we wish Biggleswade the very best of luck in the final.
Elsenham v LGCE Whites
- 6 April 2008
Venue:
Elsenham Rec
Score:
Elsenham 7-0 LGCE Whites
Scorers:
Dean Clayden 2, Sam Irish, Mason Duckett 3, Adam Mace
Mason Duckett struck his first Elsenham hat-trick and Dean Clayden added another two goals to his tally as Elsenham moved to the top of the table with success against Letchworth at a bitterly cold Recreation Ground. After kick-off had been delayed for an hour to allow the snow time to thaw, the home side wasted no time and took the lead within two minutes. Adam Mace picked the ball up in midfield and played it through for Clayden to finish clinically. However, rather than build on their initial opening, Elsenham forgot the good football that has served them so well in recent matches and became a little lazy with their passing, allowing Letchworth to establish a foothold in the game. A stalemate ensued until five minutes before the break when a ball across goal found Sam Irish in space at the back post to strike his third goal in consecutive matches. The hosts still weren't at their best in the early stages of the second half and a defensive lapse allowed Letchworth's striker to break through on goal and place a shot over 'keeper Jon Booth that crashed down off the underside of the bar. The warning seemed to awaken Elsenham and the home team finally started playing in the way they can. Midway through the half, Duckett waltzed through the Letchworth defence to strike a fine third. Clayden grabbed a fourth before Mace scored the goal of the game, smashing the ball into the top corner from fully 25 yards. Duckett got his second of the game and then completed his treble when his curling corner glided straight into the Letchworth net. A good result for the home side, but the team will need to step up their performance for the tough tests that lie ahead.
Sawbridgeworth v Elsenham
- 30 March 2008
Venue:
Sawbridgeworth
Score:
Sawbridgeworth 1-4 Elsenham
Scorers:
Mitchell Seaman, Sam Irish, Dean Clayden 2
Elsenham kept up the pressure at the top of the table with another impressive performance at Bullfields. Despite missing Adam Mace and Jon Bruce, the visitors were on top from the first whistle and pinned Sawbridgeworth back in their own half for long periods. The home side defended well, but gradually the pressure on their goal increased and the 'keeper had to dive full stretch to turn away Josh Daniel's powerful drive. Dean Clayden then had a shot cleared from underneath the bar, despite protests that the ball had crossed the line. Finally, the visitors made the breakthrough when a corner was headed out to Michael Jarvis, whose header was saved by the 'keeper, only for Mitchell Seaman to pounce from close range. Elsenham were unable to add to their lead before half-time, but it had been a quality first-half display from the boys in green. Sawbridgeworth made an effort to get back into the game early in the second half, and briefly Elsenham forgot the slick passing football that had served them so well in the opening period. Tempers reached boiling point after Clayden made a rash tackle on an opponent, however the incident seemed to bring the away team back into the groove as Elsenham doubled their lead with a superb move. Daniel combined with Clayden on the left, culiminating in a cross that Sam Irish converted from 15 yards out. Sawbridgeworth briefly got back into the match as a misunderstanding between 'keeper Jon Booth and Ed Beandland allowed the home striker to nip in and slip the ball into an empty net. However, Elsenham once again started playing with confidence and regained their two goal lead when Clayden struck a perfect 18 yard shot that went in off the far post. The same player struck again moments later with another well struck drive to give Elsenham a valuable three points.
Fairlands Blues v Elsenham
- 16 March 2008
Venue:
Barclay School
Score:
Fairlands Blues 0-3 Elsenham
Scorers:
Sam Irish, Mitchell Seaman, Dean Clayden
Elsenham stormed into the last four of the League Cup with a display full of passion and commitment at an extremely wet and windy Barclay School. The away team started well and got better and better as the game progressed to leave their divisional rivals trailing in their wake. Less than five minutes were on the clock when Elsenham took the lead. A cross from the left went through the gloves of the Fairlands 'keeper and straight to Sam Irish who put the ball into the empty net. With the wind at their backs, the visitors dominated most of the remainder of the half, with Adam Mace proving particularly influential in the middle of the park. However, Fairlands held firm at the back to go in at half-time only one goal down. The turnaround might have been expected to favour Fairlands, but instead Elsenham started the second half in tremendous style. Dean Clayden's blistering 25 yard drive crashed against the far post and Jack Gumble's follow up shot was well saved by the Fairlands 'keeper. Still the Elsenham onslaught continued and eventually the Fairlands resistance was broken. A slick passing move set up a shooting opportunity for Ed Beanland. His drive was parried by the 'keeper but Mitchell Seaman was on hand to blast in the away team's second. Elsenham weren't finished there, and Clayden struck a third before just failing to finish off a fantastic move that involved half the team taking the ball the whole length of the pitch. Fairlands managed a late spell of pressure, however on the one occasion that they managed to get through, Jon Bruce was on hand with a superb covering tackle to deny them. Bruce went into the referee's notebook as tempers became a little frayed near the end, however nothing could detract from what was a thoroughly deserved victory for the boys in green.
Elsenham v Saturn
- 9 March 2008
Venue:
Elsenham Rec
Score:
Elsenham 6-1 Saturn
Scorers:
Adam Mace, Dean Clayden 2, Robert Smith, Jack Gumble, Mitchell Seaman
Adam Mace, Robert Smith and Jack Gumble all struck their first goals of the season as Elsenham hit Saturn for six at the Recreation Ground. League positions suggested a home win was on the cards and that quickly began to look the case as Elsenham asserted from the first whistle. Only three minutes in, Mason Duckett released Mace, who forged clear of the trailing defenders and hit a shot that the 'keeper could not keep out. The hosts immediately set about adding to their advantage, but squandered a number of good opportunities before Dean Clayden finally added the second after a fine pass from Smith. Clayden soon grabbed another and Elsenham could have been out of sight by the interval but for some more rather suspect finishing. More chances went begging in the early stages of the second half, before Smith finally grabbed his goal, striking confidently into an unguarded net from 18 yards after Clayden had robbed the 'keeper. Saturn weren't prepared to roll over and as Elsenham relaxed, the away team had their best period of the game, forcing a couple of opportunities before an own-goal gave them some reward for their efforts. Elsenham had struggled against Saturn's offside trap all game, but at last they worked it out as Gumble surged clear of the opposition back line and shot powerfully into the far corner. Mitchell Seaman wrapped up matters with the home team's sixth goal in the final minute.
Elsenham v Royston Town Colts
- 2 March 2008
Venue:
Elsenham Rec
Score:
Elsenham 1-0 Royston Town Colts
Scorers:
Dean Clayden
Lightning struck for a third time at the Recreation Ground as Elsenham beat Royston to strengthen their position near the top of the table. Just as in the previous two meetings between these sides, a first-half goal from Dean Clayden was to prove decisive. However, Royston could and maybe should have taken a point from what was a typically hard-fought encounter. As expected, the early stages were evenly fought, with Royston having most of the possession, but failing to capitalise on it. A mix-up between 'keeper Jon Booth and skipper Michael Jarvis almost allowed the visitors in, however Elsenham bravely threw bodies in the way of the ball and eventually cleared the danger. With about 25 minutes played, the home side won a free kick inside their own half. Jack Gumble played a lovely high ball upfield, which Adam Mace flicked on to put Clayden through on goal. The striker kept his cool and slotted the ball calmly past the 'keeper for what proved to be the game's only goal. Elsenham had the advantage of a strong crosswind in the second period and could have stretched their lead when Mason Duckett darted in from the left, but shot wide. Royston sensed there was still an opportunity and made some prolonged incursions into home territory. A series of corners came to nothing, however Elsenham were extremely fortunate to survive when the visiting striker found himself free with the ball at his feet only five yards from goal, but somehow contrived to screw his shot high and wide. Clayden almost grabbed a second with a curling shot that went inches past the far post, meaning that Elsenham had to survive a nervous last few minutes to secure a vital win.
Stotfold v Elsenham
- 24 Febuary 2008
Venue:
Riverside Park
Score:
Stotfold 0-1 Elsenham
Scorers:
Mitchell Seaman
Elsenham were a shade fortunate to advance to the quarter-finals of the League Cup after a below-par performance against a well organized Stotfold side. With skipper Michael Jarvis rested this week, the boys knew they would need to work hard to get through and so it proved. Both sides battled hard in the early stages, but largely cancelled each other out and chances on goal were few and far between. After 15 minutes, the visitors got a large stroke of good fortune when Dean Clayden received the ball in what looked like a clear offside position, however no flag was raised, enabling Clayden to send in a shot that the 'keeper could only parry as far as Mitchell Seaman who struck the ball firmly past the covering defenders on the line. Stotfold looked to get back into the game, but it was Clayden who came closest to scoring again when his powerful 25-yard drive was well tipped over by the home 'keeper. Elsenham had a lucky escape just before half-time when Ed Beanland's mistake allowed the Stotfold striker clean through on goal. After rounding 'keeper Jon Booth, it looked like he must score, however Beanland miraculously recovered the situation and got a foot to the ball, allowing Booth to gratefully grab hold of it. The second-half was a similarly dour affair, with neither side finding it easy on a difficult playing surface. Stotfold possibly created slightly the better chances, and Booth had to be alert to turn away a goalbound effort with 15 minutes remaining. Another effort went into the side netting, however Elsenham held on to take their place in the next round.
Elsenham v Fairlands Blues
- 17 Febuary 2008
Venue:

Score:
Elsenham 1-0 Fairlands Blues
Scorers:
Luke Fisher
Luke Fisher's goal midway through the second half got Elsenham back to winning ways in this hard fought top of the table clash at the Recreation Ground. After the kick-off was delayed to give the pitch time to defrost, there was little to choose between the teams in the early stages, with both defences firmly on top. Elsenham welcomed back captain Michael Jarvis and his presence helped the home side keep Fairlands' threat to a minimum. Indeed, the visitors hardly troubled Jon Booth in the Elsenham goal for the opening 35 minutes, although at the other end, the Greens were unable to create more than a few half chances, all of which came to nothing. Elsenham started the second half at a better tempo and with the midfield getting forward to support the front players more, they began to take charge. A flowing move from left to right led to Sam Irish hitting a good cross that the 'keeper dealt with comfortably. Another good move resulted in the game's only goal. Dean Clayden played a fine pass into the path of Mason Duckett, whose powerful drive was superbly saved by the Fairlands 'keeper, only for Fisher to follow up and knock the ball into the empty net. Fairlands strove for a way back into the game, but with Adam Mace in commanding form in central midfield, they weren't able to find a way through. Indeed, it was Elsenham that came closest to scoring again when Jack Gumble hit a powerful 30 yard drive that the 'keeper only just managed to push around the post.

Elsenham 1-4 Potton Colts

Potton came from behind to end Elsenham's winning run and take over at the top of the table. With captain Michael Jarvis out of action and Ed Beanland also absent, this was always going to be a stiff test for the home team, and so it proved. Unlike their previous visit to the Recreation Ground, Potton came with a full strength side and took the game to Elsenham in the early stages. An early chance hit the inside of the post and was scrambled to safety, while 'keeper Jon Booth made a number of good saves to keep his team on level terms. Elsenham gradually began to find a foothold in the game and 10 minutes before half-time, Jack Gumble's long throw was flicked on and Dean Clayden raced onto the ball to strike the game's opening goal. Elsenham fought for everything and came off at half-time one goal to the good. The home team's first half exertions began to tell in the second half, and Potton started to dominate the midfield. With 20 minutes remaining, Jon Bruce's foul gave the visitors a free kick right on the edge of the penalty area, which was clinically dispatched as Elsenham failed to organise their wall properly. Shortly afterwards, Potton took the lead with a well struck shot into the far corner. To their credit, Elsenham fought back and could have equalised when Robert Smith was unable to head home from very short range with the goal gaping. Mason Duckett's free kick was then well saved by the Potton 'keeper. With five minutes remaining and Elsenham throwing everything forward, Potton caught them on the break to make the game safe. The visitors then scored a fourth with the last kick of the game to seal the points.

BSCFC Athletic 2-4 Elsenham
Scorers:

Elsenham pulled the game out of the fire for a third successive match to take the points against a spirited BSCFC Athletic side. The early exchanges were evenly fought, with the heavy surface and very small pitch offering neither side any assistance. With 20 minutes played, neither side had threatened a breakthrough, but with the first meaningful attack of the game Elsenham took the lead. Josh Daniel's ball from the right eventually broke for Dean Clayden to swivel and strike powerfully into the net. Athletic responded almost immediately as a long ball from the back sailed over the Elsenham defence allowing the home striker to nip in and withstand the challenges to level the score. BSCFC battled hard for everything, but the scores remained even at half-time and Elsenham had the advantage of a strong wind to come in the second period. The visitors restarted on the front foot, with Clayden twice firing over, however against the run of play Athletic took the lead when the little striker caused confusion in the Elsenham back line and poked the ball home after his initial effort had been parried. It looked like Elsenham's winning run was under threat, however with 15 minutes remaining Mason Duckett struck a slightly miscued shot which deceived the Athletic 'keeper and bounced in off the post. With parity restored, Elsenham stormed forward looking for a winner and got it when Clayden was released in front of goal and easily beat the 'keeper. Much to the surprise of the spectators, the ball ran under the net and away, however after some initial confusion the goal was correctly given. Stortford pushed forward in search of an equaliser, however as they committed more players forward Elsenham hit them on the break, releasing Mitchell Seaman to run through and make the game safe.

Score:
Sawbridgeworth 2-4 Elsenham
Scorers:
Dean Clayden 2, Mitchell Seaman, Edward Beanland
Elsenham had to come from behind for a second match in succession to take over at the top of Royston Crow League Division 2. The visitors looked to have things under control from an early stage as Dean Clayden opened the scoring after three minutes following good approach play from Mitchell Seaman and Adam Mace. However, Sawbo soon hit back with a nicely constructed goal to level the scores after six minutes. Elsenham pressed to restore their advantage, with Clayden and Mason Duckett both going close from long-range, but against the run of play Sawbo took the lead 10 minutes before half-time. Elsenham sloppily failed to close down the home side's right winger and his cross was headed over 'keeper Jon Booth and into the net. Some stern words at half-time saw Elsenham come out strongly at the start of the second half, but Sawbo could have extended their advantage when their striker broke clear but pulled his shot wide with the goal gaping. That was to prove the home team's last meaningful attack of the game as Elsenham laid seige to the Sawbo goal. Josh Daniel's cross from the right caused mayhem in the hosts' box, but somehow the ball was blocked. Daniel was proving a handful for the Sawbo defence and shortly afterwards delivered another ball in from the right which Mitchell Seaman finally stabbed home from point blank range for the equaliser. The onslaught continued and with just over 10 minutes remaining, Elsenham won a corner on their left. Clayden swung over a high ball which the onrushing Ed Beanland met with a firm header to put the visitors in front for good. With the clock ticking down, Clayden ran through to add a fourth and seal Elsenham's ninth successive league victory. So top of the table at last, now all we have to do is stay there!
Elsenham v Potton Colts

Score:
Elsenham 5-2 Potton Colts
Scorers:
Dean Clayden 3, Mason Duckett 2
Dean Clayden grabbed a hat-trick as Elsenham produced a miraculous second-half recovery to seal their eighth straight league victory at a windy and muddy Recreation Ground. Against the team that pipped them to the division title last season, Elsenham knew they were in for a tough encounter and with the stiff wind against them in the opening period, it was Potton who took control of the game. After 15 minutes, their big midfielder charged unchallenged through the middle and slammed his shot past 'keeper Jon Booth to open the scoring. The home side failed to learn their lesson and were punished again when the same player was allowed too much time on the ball and slipped it through for a team-mate to double their advantage. Elsenham had made little impression on the Potton goal, but with the wind behind them in the second-half, the game very quickly changed course. Within two minutes of the restart top scorer Dean Clayden got away from his marker and planted an unstoppable shot into the net to cut the deficit. Three minutes later, the scores were level. Clayden found substitute Robert Smith, who played a sublime pass through for Mason Duckett to fire home the equaliser. Elsenham were now in full flow and pressed to go in front, however the go-ahead goal when it eventually came was a most unusual one. Clayden's corner from the left caught the wind and was carried towards the goal, only to be cleared from underneath the bar by a Potton defender. However, the away team's linesman adjudged that the ball had in fact crossed the line and flagged for a goal which was duly awarded. A truly honest and sporting gesture. Much to their credit, Potton tried very hard to find a way back into the game despite the wind being in their faces, and only a magnificent double save from Booth prevented them from doing so. However, with a little over 10 minutes remaining Clayden got away from his defender and smacked the ball past the 'keeper to make the game safe. Moments later, Duckett struck a fantastic 25-yard free kick over the wall and into the top right hand corner to seal the win. If the team can keep up this standard of football, winning the division is becoming a distinct possibility.

Elsenham 5-1 Wymondley Park
Scorers:
Dean Clayden 2, Mitchell Seaman 2, Mason Duckett
Elsenham cruised through to the third round of the League Cup after a highly impressive performance against divisional rivals Wymondley Park. The home side made light of the visitors' size advantage in the early stages, playing the ball around with ease and forcing Wymondley to concede a number of free kicks in dangerous positions. After a number of sighters, Dean Clayden found his range and hit a 25-yard effort into the top of the goal to open the scoring. Elsenham continued to dominate and added to their lead when Clayden played the ball through for strike partner Mitchell Seaman to slip the ball past the 'keeper and inside the near post. The goal of the game came shortly before half-time. Clayden played the ball wide to Robert Smith, whose clever pass released Seaman to centre the ball for Mason Duckett to fire home. With the sun in their eyes, Elsenham maintained the standard in the second half, though Wymondley were unfortunate to see the ball bounce off the top of the bar direct from a corner. The game was up for the visitors soon afterwards though, as Clayden and Seaman each grabbed their second of the day to put the tie out of reach. Wymondley missed a penalty midway through the second half, but finally got a consolation with a shot that was twice deflected before going into the net. Elsenham were denied what looked like a clear penalty for handball near the end of the game and then had an appeal for a goal turned down after the ball appeared to cross the line after a goalmouth scramble. So the Greens march on into the next round, where they will face third division Stotfold for a place in the quarter-finals.

Score:
Elsenham 4-1 BSCFC Athletic
Scorers:
Dean Clayden 2, Mitchell Seaman, Michael Jarvis
A fine first-half performance enabled Elsenham to register their sixth straight league victory over a valiant Stortford side. The hosts started the game in commanding fashion and after only one minute Dean Clayden sent over a deep cross that the 'keeper could only help into the net. The lead was almost doubled only a minute later when Mitchell Seaman headed against a post and Clayden fired the rebound over. With the wind at their backs, Elsenham continued to press and after 15 minutes Clayden hit a shot against the bar which fell for Seaman to knock the ball home from close range. Athletic almost got a goal back when a slip in the Elsenham defence allowed their striker through on goal, but 'keeper Jon Booth made a fine save to preserve his side's advantage. With half time approaching, Adam Mace gained possession for Elsenham in the middle and sent a perfect pass for Clayden to run through and score his second of the game. The second half was a more even affair as Athletic gained the advantage of the wind, however the home team went further ahead when Mason Duckett's corner from the right was met powerfully by the head of skipper Michael Jarvis. With 15 minutes to go, a host of substitutions by the home side seemed to disrupt their formation and Stortford were able to get a goal back when their striker broke clear of the defence and finished well into the far corner. The visitors got the chance to pull another one back moments later when they were awarded a penalty. Booth superbly saved the spot kick, which was put in on the rebound, however the penalty had to be retaken for enchroachment. Incredibly, Booth saved for a second time and this time grabbed hold of the loose ball to seal the win. A superb effort from front to back boys, well done!
Cowley Boys B v Elsenham
- 2 December 2007
Venue:
Harrow Road, E11
Score:
Cowley Boys B 5-2 Elsenham
Scorers:
Mason Duckett, Dean Clayden
A flurry of late goals sent Elsenham out of this season's County Cup competition at a wet and extremely windy Leytonstone. On a pitch churned up by a preceding game, flowing football was never going to be easy and both sides struggled to adapt to the conditions in the early stages. After seven minutes, Elsenham won a free kick 25 yards out, which was expertly dispatched by Mason Duckett to put the visitors in front. Cowley fought hard for a way back into the game, but Elsenham put up stout resistance until 10 minutes before half-time when the ball fell kindly for a home striker who struck a tremendous high shot that 'keeper Jon Booth got a hand to but could not keep out. The away team almost retook the lead when Robert Smith slipped the ball through for Dean Clayden whose shot from the left of the goal glanced off the far post and behind. The miss was to prove costly as a firmly driven shot from outside the box put Cowley in front for the first time. Elsenham came out for the second half in determined mood and pulled level when Clayden hammered in a free kick from fully 30 yards out that gave the home 'keeper little chance. Cowley, however, took only 2 minutes to regain the advantage when their striker outpaced the Elsenham defence and struck a great shot into the far corner. The home side added a fourth from a free kick soon afterwards and despite Elsenham's best efforts to get back into the game, grabbed a fifth from a somewhat innocuous penalty. A bad challenge in the box from Jon Bruce gave Cowley a second penalty near the end as Elsenham began to lose their discipline, but this time Booth dived to his left to turn the spot kick away.
Royston Town Colts v Elsenham

Royston Town Colts 0-1 Elsenham
Scorers:
Dean Clayden
Dean Clayden's early goal gave Elsenham a sixth straight win and moved the team above their hosts into second place in the league table. The early exchanges were closely contested with both defences on top. Royston created a couple of half-chances, but as they pushed forward Elsenham hit them with a classic counter attack. The ball was laid out quickly to Mason Duckett on the left who sent in a superb cross that Dean Clayden headed powerfully against the post. Clayden reacted quickest to seize on the loose ball and power a shot into the net to put the visitors in front. Royston immediately set about restoring parity and for a long period Elsenham found it difficult to get out of their own half, but with 'keeper Jon Booth and his defenders standing firm their chances were few and far between. On the one occasion that a Royston player got through on goal, he was denied by a strong last-ditch tackle by skipper Michael Jarvis. Just before the interval, Elsenham so nearly went two goals ahead when Clayden struck a goalbound effort that was brilliantly headed off the line by a Royston defender. The pattern continued in the second half with both teams cancelling each other most of the time. Royston had a few speculative efforts that missed the target, however 10 minutes from the end a corner led to a shot that Mitchell Seaman did well to clear off the line. The home team were unable to make further inroads and Elsenham played out the remaining minutes to seal the win.
Saturn v Elsenham
- 18 November 2007
Venue:
UG Social Club
Score:
Saturn 0-7 Elsenham
Scorers:
Dean Clayden 4, Jon Bruce, Mitchell Seaman, Mason Duckett
Dean Clayden hit four goals as Elsenham blitzed old rivals Saturn at a bitterly cold United Glass Social Club. The away team served notice of their intent in the opening 10 minutes as Clayden and Mason Duckett both created good opportunities they were unable to convert. The opening goal soon came as Clayden outpaced a defender and comfortably tucked the ball away. A corner from the left led to Elsenham's second as Jon Bruce rose highest to head the ball into the net for his first goal in Elsenham colours. Mitchell Seaman fired home a trademark goal to make it three and Clayden grabbed his second of the game before the interval as the away side took complete control. Saturn briefly threatened at the start of the second half, but Elsenham's defence had their measure and it was the visitors who extended their lead when Clayden finished clinically to complete his hat-trick. The Elsenham striker was a little fortuitous with his fourth goal, which looped up in the air before going in off the far post, however there was nothing fortunate about Duckett's well struck shot that completed the scoring. Elsenham used the final 15 minutes to experiment with a new formation, as Bruce joined Seaman in attack. The big defender certainly gave the home linesman a good workout, being caught offside on numerous occasions before missing a glorious opportunity right at the death! So it's back to defence next week then Jon!!
Wymondley Park v Elsenham

Venue:
Hitchin Cricket Club
Score:
Wymondley Park 0-1 Elsenham
Scorers:
Mitchell Seaman
Mitchell Seaman's goal 10 minutes from time gave Elsenham their fourth league win of the season at a windy Lucas Lane. With Wymondley having been unable to field more than 10 men in any of their previous three matches, the home side had the luxury of a substitute this week, leaving Elsenham facing a tough task against a physically strong and imposing team. The early exchanges were hard fought with neither defence offering much opportunity to the opposition attack. Gradually, Wymondley began to make their strength and size count, camping themselves in the Elsenham half, but with 'keeper Jon Booth doing a great job of marshalling his defenders, the visitors kept them out with few alarms. With the wind behind them in the second half, Elsenham started to pose more of a threat. Dean Clayden was finding the home side's imposing sweeper hard to escape from, but almost got on the end of a ball out from the back that the goalkeeper held at the second attempt. Mason Duckett had a similar opportunity, while Robert Smith could only hit the side netting when bearing down on goal. Wymondley were finding the Elsenham defence a tough nut to crack, but went close with a shot that just missed. Just as it seemed the game was likely to end in deadlock, a ball from left to right found Seaman, who struck a fierce shot across the 'keeper and into the far corner to give Elsenham the points.

Score:
Billericay Town Colts B 0-3 Elsenham
Scorers:
Dean CLayden, Luke Fisher, Edward Beanland
Elsenham advanced to round 3 of the County Cup with a deserved success against Chelmsford League side Billericay. With the teams unknown to each other, the opening stages were quiet cagey, however the visitors gradually began to make more of an impression on the Billericay goal. Dean Clayden went close with a trademark long range effort before scoring a stunning opening goal, striking the ball over his shoulder and into the far top corner of the net. Elsenham continued to press with Mason Duckett in particular having a number of efforts on goal. However just before half-time, Billericay managed to pierce the Elsenham back line, sending their lively striker through on goal to strike a powerful shot that 'keeper Jon Booth did well to block with his body. Despite having the slope against them in the second half, the away side continued to look the more likely in the second half. Clayden's shot clipped the bar, while Duckett and Adam Mace both sent in shots that narrowly missed the target. Eventually, the pressure told when Mace laid the ball back for midfield partner Luke Fisher to strike a superb 25-yard shot that gave the home 'keeper no chance. An injury to centre half Jon Bruce required a tactical reshuffle from Elsenham and the Billericay striker almost capitalised when he broke through, but was again denied by an alert Booth. With the clock ticking down, a ball from the Elsenham right found its way across to Edward Beanland at the far post who looped the ball into the far corner to seal the win.

Venue:

Score:
Elsenham 4-2 Letchworth GCE Whites
Scorers:
Dean Clayden 2, Edward Beanland, OG
Elsenham beat Letchworth for a second week running, but had to face much stiffer resistance than they did a week earlier even though the visitors played throughout with only 10 men. Predictably, Elsenham made a strong start and it took a quite breathtaking save from the Letchworth 'keeper to deny Dean Clayden an opening goal after five minutes. Much like the previous week, the Greens kept creating chances but were unable to convert them and their profligacy was punished when against the run of play Letchworth took the lead. A free kick into the box was not dealt with properly and the ball ran under the foot of skipper Michael Jarvis into the path of the visiting striker who made no mistake. Elsenham needed a quick response and got it when Clayden found himself through on goal and beat the 'keeper with ease. The hosts then took the lead when Mason Duckett beat his opponent and sent in a low cross which the Letchworth defender could only turn into his own net. Elsenham had chances to put the game out of reach, with Jon Bruce and Sam Irish both hitting the post, but just before half-time Letchworth pulled level after another defensive lapse by the home side. The visitors came out for the second half determined to hold onto what they had and despite having the strong wind in their favour, Elsenham were finding the 10 hard to break down. With 20 minutes remaining, Jarvis was sent up to support Clayden in attack and the move paid dividends when Clayden finally got the chance he needed to put the home side back in the lead. Moments later a great cross from the right found the onrushing Edward Beanland who buried his shot to make the points safe. Fair play to Letchworth, who despite their numerical disadvantage made us battle much harder than they did a week ago.
Letchworth Whites v Elsenham

Venue:
Baldock Road Recreation
Score:
Letchworth Whites 1-5 Elsenham
Scorers:
Luke Fisher (pen), Dean Clayden 2, Ross Cooper, Mitchell Seaman
Elsenham got their league campaign up and running in emphatic style with a formidable performance against Letchworth at Baldock Road Recreation Ground. The visitors were in the ascendency from the opening whistle, with some great passing and movement that had Letchworth pinned back into their own half for long periods. After a number of missed opportunities, Elsenham finally took the lead when Dean Clayden was brought down in the box and Luke Fisher cooly converted from the spot. The lead was soon doubled when Clayden received the ball 30 yards out and turned to hit a spectacular drive into the top of the Letchworth goal. Mitchell Seaman almost grabbed a third when he broke away and sent a shot inches over. However, just before half-time a bad defensive lapse allowed Letchworth to grab a goal back with their only shot of the half. The pattern remained the same in the second period with the midfield pairing of Fisher and Adam Mace running the game in the middle, assisted by Mason Duckett on the left and Jack Gumble and Sam Irish down the right. Chances came and went, but eventually a corner from the Elsenham right caused mayhem in the Letchworth box and Ross Cooper was on hand to stab home a rare goal for his side. Clayden hit home a fourth and Seaman converted a fifth, with both players also hitting a post as Elsenham ran out very impressive winners.

Fairlands Youth Blues v Elsenham
- 14 October 2007
Venue:
Barclay School
Score:
Fairlands Youth Blues 2-0 Elsenham
After more than a month of waiting, Elsenham finally got their league campaign underway, but it was a disappointing start as the Greens fell to defeat in a tightly fought contest at Barclay school. The visitors made the worst possible start by conceding a free kick in the opening minute, from which they failed to clear the ball properly, allowing the Fairlands player to knock the ball over 'keeper Jon Booth for the first goal. The game ebbed and flowed for the next 15 minutes, but it was Fairlands who doubled their lead when a corner was only partially cleared, allowing the home player to crack a volley into the top of the net. Finally, Elsenham started to get their act together and after 25 minutes Dean Clayden hit a fierce drive which cracked against the inside of the post and ran across the goal to safety. Fairlands had an even more fortunate reprieve moments later. Mason Duckett collected the ball on the left and swung in a cross which eluded everyone and went straight into the far corner of the goal. Incredibly, and in the opinion of most observers wrongly, the goal was ruled out for offside even though no-one touched the ball on its way in! The second-half proved to be even closer fought than the first, though Elsenham's midfield were finding it difficult to supply the front line effectively. Clayden twice went close from free kicks, and then beat off numerous challenges before squaring the ball only for it to run right across goal without getting a touch. Fairlands also had a limited number of second-half chances, but in the end held on fairly comfortably for the win.
Notley Hawks v Elsenham
- 30 September 2007
Venue:
Black Notley Playing Fields
Score:
Notley Hawks 1-1 Elsenham
Scorers:
Mitchell Seaman
Jon Booth was Elsenham's penalty shoot-out hero as his three saves helped the team edge past Notley in this first-round County Cup tie at Black Notley. With the scores level at 1-1 after extra-time, the teams traded blows in a nail-biting shoot-out until Booth made the match-winning save from his opposite number to send the Greens through by a 5-4 scoreline. The result was tough on Notley, who contributed fully to a pulsating tie where either team might have won. Booth had to be at his best in the opening period of normal time to get a hand to a goalbound header from Notley's big striker, while at the other end Mitchell Seaman twice came close to giving Elsenham the lead. Seaman eventually broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half after a superb move by the visitors. Michael Jarvis brought the ball out of defence and twice exchanged passes with Mason Duckett, who played the ball on for Dean Clayden. Clayden's centre found Adam Mace, whose initial shot was blocked by the 'keeper only for Seaman to rifle home the rebound. Clayden then came within inches of doubling the lead when he broke away, but saw his shot roll agonisingly wide of the post. Notley made the most of their reprieve and equalised midway through the half after a rare lapse by Elsenham's otherwise outstanding back line. The away team thought they had won it right at the end when Clayden converted from close range, only to see his effort ruled out for what must have been a very close offside decision. Both teams created chances in extra-time, Notley seeing a shot go narrowly wide and then with seconds left Clayden again burst through, but saw his shot just miss at the far post. Well done boys, but let's not forget our opponents, who could have progressed just as easily as us.

Division 2 Elsenham proved far too good for Division 4 Barmond in this first round League Cup clash at Hampson Park. After a slow opening 10 minutes, Elsenham clicked into gear and took the lead with a goal from Dean Clayden. That immediately opened the floodgates, and within a minute Clayden laid the ball back for Mason Duckett to sidefoot home. Clayden then got the goal of the game when he latched onto Adam Mace’s flick and cracked home a spectacular 20 yard volley. Duckett was unfortunate to see his left footed drive strike the inside of the post, but shortly afterwards Luke Fisher was on hand to turn in Elsenham’s fourth. Mitchell Seaman and Jack Gumble were introduced from the substitutes bench after 20 minutes and Seaman immediately got on the scoresheet with his first touch of the game. Michael Jarvis headed home Clayden’s corner, before Clayden completed his hat-trick just before half-time. The second-half was a similar tale, with Duckett and Clayden adding further goals before a Barmond defender put through his own net. Duckett came so close to his own hat-trick with a spectacular drive that cannoned off the bar, while Seaman grabbed his second shortly afterwards. Elsenham brought ‘keeper Jon Booth out on pitch for the final 15 minutes and after scoring twice he was denied a quick-fire hat-trick when his penalty was saved by the Barmond ‘keeper. Thanks to Barmond for their sporting attitude throughout. We wish them well for the rest of the season.

Langley Colts 1-8 Elsenham
Scorers:
Jarvis, Seaman 2, Clayden 3, Fisher pen, Duckett
The under-14s visited Church Langley for their final warm-up game and came away with a fine victory after a most impressive display. With Dean Clayden and Mitchell Seaman restored up front, Elsenham looked much more like their usual selves and were soon putting Langley on the back foot. The opening goal came from a familiar route with Michael Jarvis leaping highest to head Clayden's corner firmly past the 'keeper. On 10 minutes, the visitors doubled their lead when Seaman latched onto Mason Duckett's ball in from the left. A third soon followed when 'keeper Jon Booth's monster goal kick sailed over the Langley back line, enabling Clayden to surge through and hit a shot which was saved by the 'keeper, only for the striker to score following up. Seaman added a fourth before the home side got one back shortly before half-time with a sweetly struck shot into the corner. Elsenham kept up the pace in the second half and Clayden soon got his second of the day to extend the lead. After about 15 minutes of the second half, Clayden was fouled in the box, enabling Luke Fisher to step up and slot home the resulting penalty. Duckett got in on the goalscoring act shortly afterwards, hitting a fierce left footed drive high into the goal, before Clayden sealed his hat-trick with Elsenham's eighth. All-in-all a most satisfactory preparation for the new season. Our thanks go to Langley for providing such a good venue. We wish Carl and his lads all the best for the coming season.
